Environmental Art Gallery

The Theme that I have chosen is Environmental Art. I plan to take several influential artists and display their works that shook up the art world. The artists I will explore are Andy Goldsworthy,Nils-Udo, and Keith Barrett. There is no other reason why I picked these artists than the fact that their works almost instantly attracted me.

.

1. This is Rowan Leaves & Hole by Andy Goldsworthy. Goldsworthy is a British Photographer/ Sculpture who was educated in Fine Arts at Bradford College of Art. This piece was created on October 25, 1987 at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Bretton. This piece grabbed my attention because there is nothing but natural objects used to creat this optical illusion.

2. This is The Nest by He is a Bavarian artist that started his career as a painter in Paris but later moved to Germany where he began to create his environmental art. This piece was created in  Lineberg Heath,Germany in 1978. This piece is was created using only stones, earth, silver birch logs, and grass. It is intriguing because it looks as if it is large enough to have been a dinosaur’s nest!!!! WOW!!!

3. This is Neils-Udo’s Entrance, which was created in Bayern, Germany in 1993. This is literally a tunnel underneath these woods and he discovered that it was a pretty  long path, so he created an entrance to walk into this hollowed path. This is just awesome because all he used was a stick and some big leaves to create an doorway for an underground pathway

4. This is Nils-Udo’s Lava Flames, which was created in Reunion, India(I cannot find a date on this piece). I really enjoyed the concept of this piece. These flowers represent the destruction that took place during the active lava flow but then they also represent the new life that has taken place. This new life seems to have taken the characteristics of what destroyed it (looking like fire or flames from lava).  This is a beautiful and thought provoking piece.

5. This is Keith Barrett’s Whalsay, which was created in Shetland, Scotland in 2001(on a remote island). Barrett is an environmental artist/scultpure who was educated at Falmouth School of Art. This piece was meant to look as if a clam is stick up from the earth. It is also meant to be somewhat of an optical illusion to passers-by. I simply just love this piece!

6. This is Keith Barrett’s Harshaw Linn and it was created in Hareshaw Linn, Bellingham, Northumberland in 2002. This piece is a bridge made of elm and oak wood, stone, and stainless steel. The cool thing about this bridge is that it is in the middle of nowhere and is above a nice flowing brook, which means that since this was built it has been sitting there untouched and probably has started to be overgrown by nature. I say that this is cool because im sure that now it looks as if it were a natural bridge with moss, vines etc growing all over.

Thank you for your gallery! It was so nice to see the environmental artwork. I love that you projected what the Harshaw Linn bridge looks like now… made me envision it for myself… how magical. The art is so thought provoking. It is so physical, tangible and honoring and natural. Its so clean and pure. When I was viewing the pieces, I felt as if I were there… as if I could walk through Udo’s Entrance with my children and afterwards go for a picnic in the forest. I love it. I love that it makes me want to ensure these wonderful places are still around for my grand kids. I love that this art makes me cherish my country life. I love that it makes me appreciate the days on the beach with the kids. Wonderful!!!!!
